Soap Test

The Soap Test procedure says to use .4% Bromophenol. I have been doing this for a while now and have found out a couple of things. First, it is almost impossible to get all of the Bromophenol Blue powder to dissolve at that concentration. It is just too concentrated.
Second, 1/2 a dropper of .04% Bromophenol Blue is PLENTY!

Phenolphthalein50Plus.JPG Phenolphthalein Indicator 50+ mL in 59 mL bottle
$8.00
Phenolphthalein, .55 grams of Phenolphthalein powder in a 59 mL dropper bottle.
I used to ship 50%water/50%alcohol solutions. The indicator seems to work better with less water, but I am not going to ship a flamable liquid. Now the bottle contains the powder, you need to add 55mL of alcohol. Standard alcohol from the drug store is 70% alcohol. For a few cents more you can get 91% alcohol. For a little more than that you can pick up a red bottle of HEET brand gas line anti-freeze. It is 99% ISO alcohol. (Don't get the yellow bottle, it is methanol.) Even the standard alcohol is better than the 50% alcohol solution I was shipping.
You get a better product, I don't have to ship a flamable liquid. Plus, you know it will be fresh!
